Fur coats need to be maintained properly.

Keeping your fur in good condition can be a challenge. Fur is an investment, but you want to wear it and enjoy it without being overly careful. Still, there are a few things one must do to keep fur in good condition. After a few months of owning and wearing a fur, these things become second nature and you’re on your way to a lifetime investment that you’ll enjoy for years to come.

How you store your fur depends on how warm it is where you live. You can keep your home at a certain temperature, but you have to make sure there is no humidity in the room or space you’re storing your fur. Many older homes and buildings have crevices and openings that allow outside air to come into a space, creating mildew and a muggy feeling in the air for a fur to be stored. These spaces are the exact type of environment you want to avoid for your fur. Your fur needs to be in a cool, crisp space. If the air in your home is cool during the spring, you may consider putting your fur in professional storage for the summer months. Not everyone wants to put their fur away for several seasons. Putting your fur into professional fur storage for a few short months can make all the difference in the longevity of your fur.

Air must be properly circulated to prevent a fur from becoming moldy or developing an “old” smell. If you do not put your fur away into professional storage, let it air out for a day or two once every other month. This prevents it from becoming stale because it is exposed to the same air for months on end. If fur is kept in close quarters, brush through it with your fingers when you air it out. This breaks up the hair and prevents it from becoming tight or clumping together. This is a common problem for fur that is inherited by someone who doesn’t wear fur. If you’re looking to keep the fur in good condition for future generations, you want to give it a light comb with your fingers and expose it to fresh air regularly. Do not brush through fur hair with a brush or comb, as this can pull hairs and also expose the fur to natural oils that have collected on the brush or comb. A professional cleaning for a fur coat also increases its life span. A professional cleaning should be done every year or every other year depending on how often you wear the fur coat.
