Fur coat storage
Improper storage of fur coats can result in great damage.

You have probably heard all the advice to make sure you store your fur coats properly during the summer months when you won’t be using them. However, you may feel that fur storage is just too expensive and not worth it. However, once you understand why fur storage is so important and how improper storage can severely damage your fur coats, you may quickly change your mind. If your fur coat becomes damaged, you may never be able to wear it again.

Moisture

Fur coats do require some degree of moisture when you store them, but the amount of humidity required is quite specific. If you don’t have enough moisture, the fur on your coat can become brittle and break and the leather can crack, leaving the coat beyond repair. When this happens, the fur can even shed, leaving bare spots. Store your fur coat in storage conditions that are too humid, and you will find mold on the leather of your fur coat. Getting the level of humidity just right is nearly impossible to do at home.

Temperature

Storing your fur coat at a specific temperature is also important. You need to make sure you are storing it at less than 55 degrees so your coat stays in good shape. The reason for the cooler temperature is to slow down the natural breakdown of the furs. Fur coats are biological and will naturally deteriorate over time. Cold slows down that deterioration.

Insects

Insects, such as moths, can be your fur coat’s worst enemy. When the moths get into the furs, they will nest in it and create holes that will be visible when you go to wear your coat again. Some people try to avoid this by storing a fur coat in a cedar chest or a plastic bag or using moth balls. All of these methods are not advised because they can cause further damage or add smells to your coat. Fur coats need to breathe and you don’t want to add anything that will a bad smell to your coat.

Proper fur storage will prevent all of these issues from occurring. As long as you choose a company with a good reputation, you can feel secure knowing your fur coat will be in great shape once you get it out of storage. Running the risk of improperly storing your fur coat isn’t worth it, especially when you consider the cost of buying a new one.
