Learn the process of creating fur coats.
Fur coats require a lot of time and precision.

If you’ve ever looked at a fur coat, you may think the whole thing is made from one continuous piece of fur. However, if you consider the size of the animals from which the fur is harvested. In fact, many of these animals are quite small and don’t yield nearly enough fur for any type of fur fashion. Therefore, it can be helpful to understand a little about the process of making fur coats.

Create a Template

The first step in the process of creating new fur coats is to create a template of the coat design. This will allow the furrier to create pelts in the right size or shape for the coat. The same template may be used to create multiple coats made from different types of fur or the same furs.

Cut and Match the Fur

It’s no mistake that the best fur fashions look as though they are made from one piece of fur. The most pain staking part of the process, cutting the furs and matching them up to create the most fluid piece is also the most important aspect of creating new fur fashions. Most people aren’t aware most fur coats are made from many strips of pelt sewn together for one larger piece from which the coat can then be cut.

Blocking and Squaring

Once the furs are cut, matched and sewn back together, the blocking and squaring process begins. During the blocking process, the furrier wets the fur and stretches it against the pattern, which is drawn on a board made from a soft material. Once the pelt dries, it is removed and the final pattern is drawn onto the pelt with a special marker. Any excess fur beyond the markings is removed.

Sewing and Finishing

The final step in the process is sewing and finishing the fur coat. This is a sensitive process requiring care and precision to avoid damaging the precious furs. One of the last things the furrier will do is add buttons, zippers and any other accessories to complete the coat.

Creating fur coats can be a long, tedious process, but it is worth it once you see the end result. The quality of fur fashions makes the process seem effortless. However, once you realize everything involved in the process, you will appreciate your furs even more.
