When it comes to American (and perhaps world) fashion, few people can outdo our First Ladies! It’s only natural, really. When you’re in one of the most important sociopolitical positions, you’re obligated to look as sharp as possible. While the trend has unfortunately died out in recent years, quite a few First Ladies were fond of fur apparel. In fact, you can find all types of fur coats in old photos of our First Ladies from several decades ago. Lady Bird Johnson’s Fur Cuffs
The 1960s was one of the best decades for fashion—or, at least, fur fashion! Take the fabulous Lady Bird Johnson, for instance. For the 1965 inauguration ceremony of President LBJ, Ms. Lady Bird Johnson donned a gorgeous, flowing gown. It was all yellow in color, save for the cuffs of her sleeves, which were made from rich, deep brown fur and curtained white opera gloves. This unique style truly displays how to wear real fur to its fullest!
The Fur Stole of Mamie Eisenhower
A fur stole is always an elegant choice, especially for a swanky night out. First Lady Mamie Eisenhower was the picture of elegance during her husband’s 1953 inaugural ball, where she wore a shimmering evening dress. In fact, she shined all over! Around her neck she wore not only a dazzling choker made exclusively of diamond, but a bright stole, its fur a snowy white. We can’t imagine a more elegant way to wear fur! The common black and white photos you’ll find surely don’t do the ensemble justice, but there’s no denying Ms. Eisenhower looked incredibly refined.
Bess Truman’s Elegant Fur Coat
When President Harry S. Truman was inaugurated, First Lady Bess Truman truly looked remarkable for the occasion. One of the first things we notice is her real fur jacket, layered delicately over her gown. It pairs perfectly, in fact, considering the dainty white ruffle trailing from the shoulder of her dress. We love the combination of fabrics as well, as the fur from her jacket blends well with the velvet fabric of her dress.
