After all, a good fur coat is easily one of the most gorgeous and priceless items you can add to any closet! At the same time, it will be in your (and your fur coat’s) best interest to do everything to can to keep your coat in good condition. While learning how to take care of real fur can be tricky at first, it isn’t nearly as hard to stay on top of once you know what to look for and what steps to take. Wear Your Fur Well

Part of taking proper care of a real fur coat involves knowing how to wear it. The “rules” of wearing fur apply less on how to look fashionable (though style still matters!), and instead focus more on the practical side of wearing your fur. More specifically, pairing your fur with certain garments and maintaining certain habits make your fur more susceptible to lasting damage.

For instance, we do not recommend wearing strapped dresses and tops with your fur coat, especially if they have adjustable clasps. The straps will rub against the inside of the coat, causing extra friction that can erode the fabric. Furthermore, merely sitting down in your fur coat can also cause damage. The fur your coat is made from is delicate, and excess pressure can crush the material beyond repair. Sitting down for extended periods is like pressing a paperweight against your coat; it will flatten the material and make it look far less attractive. If you’re going to be sitting down for a long period of time, it is ideal to take off your fur and hang it somewhere safe.

What If It Gets Wet?

While a wet real fur coat may seem like an emergency, it really depends on how wet your coat has become. A quick drizzle or a thin layer of snow won’t hurt your coat too much as long as you start the drying process as quickly as possible. All you have to do is remove the excess moisture, preferably by shaking the coat, then hang the coat where there is plenty of dry, cool air. It should take your coat no more than a day or two to dry out completely. However, if your coat is extremely wet, your best option is to see a professional as soon as possible. They will know how to treat your coat so it sustains little to no permanent damage.
