how to wear real furEveryone knows how sweltering Texas summers can be. During this time of year, most people want nothing more than to stick to tank tops, shorts, and other clothing that allows them to keep as cool as possible. So what does this mean for those whose preferred pieces of clothing are vintage fur coats? The majority of fur enthusiasts agree that this time of year should be the period where fur apparel gets sent off to storage. However, there remains a separate group who believe fur should be worn all year ‘round. While this belief system may sound irrational, there are ways to work with the Texas heat and rock your fur apparel stylishly and comfortably at the same time.

Here are a few tips to keep in mind when it comes to whether to choose between vintage fur coats for the season, or another form of fur accessories.

Pay Attention to the Time of Year

No matter the season, the weather in Texas typically skews warmer than other states further up north. However, that doesn’t mean you have to stick to lightweight items all throughout the year! Knowing how to dress for the weather is an important part of how to wear real fur—as well as fashion in general!

When it comes to the summer and early fall months, heavy vintage fur coats are generally a no-go. More specifically, the heat typically starts to ramp up during May and doesn’t cool down until around late September. From there, the temperature will continue to get colder, but rarely will you see it dip into the subzero temperatures you can expect in other parts of the country.

For cool but comfortable days out—the kind you will typically experience in the fall and in spring—it’s perfectly okay to break out some of the lighter pieces of fur apparel in your wardrobe. Think vests, jackets and items with fur lining. These will keep you cozy in the face of brisk winds.

Check the Outdoor Temperature

Everyone who has spent a bit of time in Texas knows the weather isn’t quite as predictable as it may seem. Even when the weather seems like it’s cooling down, we’ll bear witness to the occasional hot day. On the flip side, a fairly warm winter can suddenly give way to ice, snow and freezing temperatures. When in doubt, it never hurts to peek at the temperature outdoors.

As a general tip, if the temperature is above 60°F, you’ll want to keep your heavy vintage fur coats at home and stick to something lighter. It’s perfectly fine to wear heavy pieces of fur apparel if the temperatures fall under 60°F—especially on those days the temperature falls between the 30° to 40°F range.
