Even though fur coats are quite versatile and durable, you can still experience problems with your coat, just like any other garment you wear. However, your fur coat is a little more sensitive than your average piece of clothing. For instance, while you can get your fur coat wet, you will need to make sure it dries thoroughly so it doesn’t mold. You can’t just throw it in your dryer to dry it off. If anything else happens to your fur coat, you will need to have it repaired.
Rips and Tears
Rips and tears aren’t incredibly common in fur coats, but they can happen. When you are wearing your fur coat, make sure you pay attention to where you are at all times. If your coat becomes snagged, take care to free it in a way that won’t damage your coat. If you do notice a rip or tear in your coat, take it to your furrier as soon as possible to have it repaired. If you delay the repair and continue to wear the coat, you are at risk for damaging your coat even further.
Bald Spots
Because fur coats are made from fur, they can end up with bald spots, especially if you don’t take proper care of your coat. For instance, if you drive for a long period of time sitting on your fur coat, you may end up rubbing bald spots in your coat over time. When this happens, you will need to take your coat to furrier for an evaluation. In some cases, a furrier may be able to patch the spot to get rid of the bald spot.
Inspections
Even if you don’t think your fur coat is damaged, it is important to have a furrier evaluate it at least once a year. When you put your fur coat into storage is one of the best times for this inspection. During the inspection, your furrier will look for damage that may have gone unnoticed when you wore your coat. They can then fix your coat so you don’t need to worry when you take it out of storage again.
Taking care of fur coats can be a lot of work. However, as long as you keep an eye out for damage and fix it as soon as you notice, you won’t need to worry about ruining your fur coat. Having it inspected annually by your furrier can also help prolong the life of your coat.
